Tired of the Hormonal Roller Coaster?
As women, we are used to fluctuating hormones. Since adolescence, we’ve experienced the highs and lows of the monthly hormonal roller coaster.
And for women who are entering perimenopause or menopause, the intensity and frequency of these changes can feel like, well, A LOT. From suggesting extreme diets to hawking countless supplements, there is no shortage of advice for “balancing hormones.”
But are there real strategies to manage the symptoms that come with fluctuating midlife hormones? According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, there are steps you can take to help you feel better:
As with most physical and mental issues, it’s important to start with an expert. Make an appointment with your OB-GYN to discuss your symptoms and ask about medications that can help, including hormonal treatments.
Make sure you are prioritizing sleep. Lack of sleep could be negatively impacting your emotions, your mood, and even your behavior. If hot flashes are waking you up, use a fan—a cool, dark room is essential to getting a good night’s sleep.
Shake up your exercise routine. Both yoga and strength training have been researched as promising strategies for managing symptoms.
Eat a healthy, balanced diet that limits sugar and caffeine.
Consider trying stress-relieving strategies like meditation and journaling.
Talk about how you are feeling. There are tremendous benefits from connecting with other women who are going through similar experiences. You are not alone!
While these strategies are suggested for managing menopausal symptoms, it’s no secret implementing any or all of these have a multitude of benefits. What can’t hurt might help, right?
