Perimenopausal Rage. Why Am I So Mad?

I’ve never been one to have much “PMS.” A few cramps here and there, some chocolate cravings, nothing major. Around age 41, I found myself suddenly filled with rage a couple of weeks before my cycle, consistently. We all get frustrated when family members leave the kitchen messy, but this was different—I was irrationally angry, and I found it difficult to resolve my feelings quickly.

During my next well-woman appointment, I mentioned it to my provider. She said, Oh yeah: ‘perimenopausal rage.’” I was surprised it had a name.

Perimenopausal rage is defined as a sudden rush of anger or irritation. One moment you could be feeling untroubled, and the next you’re bursting with anger. This could be related to low estrogen levels.

Naturally my next question was, “What can I do about it?” Her response, “Not much” but there are some supplements that she has heard good things about. She warned me that they were expensive and stressed that it was important that I give them at least 3 months to work. I was supplied with a card with a promo code to get my first month’s supply at a discount.

I began taking Seronol by Bonafide shortly thereafter. And, over time, I found that it helped - my extreme bouts of rage were reduced. Of course, these supplements run about $40/month, and they may not work for everyone.
